5BE81FBE-8AB0-4DCA-9EB6-BC4DD1D3B13A.jpgMatch has gone through a pretty radical redesign. Nobody I’ve talked to is a big fan of what they did with the Connections page, but I like the new Daily 5 feature, which is similar to what OkCupid recently launched. I’ll dig into the new features and look later on this week. What do you think of the new layout?

matchdaily5.jpg Sending another email to people with their Daily Five brings people back to the site more to check on their potential matches. Increases logins and pageviews, which is good, but the matches are no different than a basic search, which I already get emails from.

The overall design refresh is ok, gone are the black headers which I don’t miss one bit. The site now looks like a bunch of modules displayed on the page, lacking a coherent design but seems to load much faster.

Match.com in the UK is featuring personality testing. According to a personality testing guru, it’s a rebranded version of the Chemistry.com matching system.

Back in the day, Match has personality tests powered by WeAttract. Match fell afoul of the WeAttract terms of service, because they were using, or going to use it, on their UK site. Match got rid of the matching system, which was picked up by Yahoo, which did a nice job integrating test results with searching and profiles.

I talked to WeAttract about this last year, they said they were in the middle of legal proceedings with Match and couldn’t talk much about the situation.

Search for WeAttract and you’ll find everything I’ve written about the company and it’s role with Match and Yahoo.

The 30-minute test will take users through 56 questions, some based on images, to help those searching for a partner. Early results show 88% of members were completing the test. (Via NewMediaAge magazine. and Online Personals Watch.)

Are You Interested Starts Sharing

by David Evans on December 1, 2008 · 0 comments

in Features

areyouinterestedsharethis.jpgFacebook dating application Are you Interested has implemented a sharing feature where you can share people with your friends. The icon is a copy of the ShareThis social sharing application you see on blogs these days. I’ve always wondered how many people use the “Send to a friend” feature on dating sites. What person would share the woman in this photo with anyone?

OkCupid Redesign Notes

by David Evans on November 28, 2008 · 5 comments

in Dating Sites

okcupidLifestreaming.jpgOKCupid has gone through a redesign. I like the new recent activity tabs, makes it easy to see what others are up to. Many forward-looking dating sites are implementing activity streams. If you know what a Facebook wall is, that’s basically what dating sites are beginning to offer.

I checked out the forum, there is a lot of activity there, but I couldn’t find a decent description of what’s changed in recent weeks. Calling Sam Yagan, what’s the story?

With the redesign, OKCupid has clearly taken over the young-n-hip dating site award from FastCupid. Look at the comparison between OKCupid and Fastcupid. Fastcupid has been stuck at the same traffic level for years now. Penthouse is obviously not treating it like a first-class site in their network, which is shame. Back in the Day, Fastcupid, when it was part of SpringStreet Networks, was the best dating site out there, bar none. They were way ahead of the majority of dating sites in terms of functionality for years. Not enough marketing dollars spent and traffic-driving partnerships forged = existing in the dead zone.
The internet dating industry is lives and dies by traffic. If you can’t afford it or don’t understand the intricacies of Internet marketing, don’t bother playing the game, you’re wasting your money and other people’s time.

Finding Great Online Dating Web Developers

by David Evans on November 28, 2008 · 0 comments

in Startups

People often ask me for references to great developers to build their dating sites. I’ve found it tremendously difficult to find reliable developers fluent in various dating platform programming dialects, so I’ve been digging around for resources. Here’s one from The Thifty Geek, Comparing the Online Freelance/Consulting sites. This isn’t a list of developers, but a matrix comparing the most popular hubs for sending RFP’s out to developers.

If you are a developer and know your way around popular dating site software, let me know.

Bisexual sues eHarmony for discrimination

by David Evans on November 28, 2008 · 0 comments

in Niche

Pandora’s box has been opened. Gays weren’t enough, now eHarmony is in the hotseat for not catering to bisexuals. Where is the logical end to the types of people eHarmony must serve. Unhappy polygamists? (thanks to anonymous for this.)

Lunch with TrustPlus

logo-trustplus.gifI had a great lunch with TrustPlus founder Shawn Broderick. TrustPlus helps people trust by letting them view the reputations of others and by building their own reputations - anywhere on the Web. TrustPlus is building a community of trust, giving people the tools to weed out fraudulent buyers and sellers, assess a potential friend, know which reviewers are reliable, protect themselves and others from online predators, and much more. TrustPlus has a reputation viewer browser plugin as well.

TrustPlus presented at Webinnovators here in Boston in January 2007. I mentioned them here and again here.

Bonefish Interview Part 2

by David Evans on November 28, 2008 · 3 comments

in White Label

Ugh, I feel fat and I’m crashing from my tryptophan high. I’ve got a lot of posts queued up for the next several days. Enjoy the weekend and drive/travel safe.

What are Bone Fish’s up-coming plans?

Bone Fish has very recently expanded its entire team so that it can ensure a smoother running of the entire service and affiliate program. At this moment in time, it is actually finishing off the final touches to its brand new members’ area, and hopes that this development will help to retain and capture existing and new members alike. In the same manner, it has revamped all its member communications and emails, and has taken a more hands-on approach with regard to member promotions and the like. Ultimately, Bone Fish aims to maintain as much direct contact as possible with all of its members and to increase its conversion rates as the months go by.

And it’s doubtful that it will stop there. In the coming year Bone Fish hopes to extend its platform further with a new (and much more comprehensive) admin centre, additional segmented niche networks and a ton of other new features that it can’t yet unveil to the public.

What are your main obstacles and pitfalls? How could Bone Fish perform better? What are its main problems and how is it addressing them?

I would be wrong in saying that everything works 100% of the time and never goes wrong. But having said this, at Bone Fish we have never really experienced any great problems either. But if I had to highlight two areas that occasionally cause stumbling blocks, it would have to be “hacking” and “scammers and spammers”.

Hackers- When someone attempts to hack into our system we have to temporarily restrict access to the admin centre to protect ourselves and our service. And yes, there have been times when this has severely affected our affiliates. With this in mind, back in June we installed a Cisco Firewall Module and employed tighter security measures to ensure that our system would efficiently filter these specific attacks and therefore lessen the blow to the service as a whole. And although this may not be enough in the long run, for the time being this coupled with the extreme tightening of security measures is signifying a less volatile existence of the Admin Centre, a relatively improved speed of service and less downtime. However, this issue is very much on-going so – as with many companies of this kind – it seems that we’re going to have to constantly keep looking for new ways to combat attacks on our system. To a certain extent I think that it’s always going to be an ongoing battle.

2.Scammers and Spammers – on a daily basis scammers and spammers are tracked as fast as possible and about 98% are caught and removed. However, this is not an easy feat and due to the fact that this affects our reputation with banks, members and affiliates, (the latter of which are being hit by chargebacks on a weekly basis), this issue has become our number one priority with us being forced to employ stricter and stricter measures time after time.

In an attempt to combat these issues, Bone Fish has now brought on-board a full-time Risk Manager that dedicates her time 100% to protecting members and affiliates alike. For obvious reasons we cannot specify the procedure that she undertakes, but we can tell you that since her inception the scamming rate has gone down by 80%. However, as with the issue of hacking, this is probably always going to be a constant battle.

Each company has a sweet-spot, what’s yours?

Bone Fish is renowned for its exemplary affiliate account management. It does not believe in automated email responses or even email-ONLY contact, but instead likes to get-to-know each and every affiliate and to have as much personalized 1-on-1 contact as possible. As such, Bone Fish not only assigns new affiliates a dedicated account manager that’s available nearly 24-7, but it also takes the time to phone them, send them through tips and tricks of the trade, and keep them updated via newsletters, the blog, corporate communications and the like.

What’s more, Bone Fish really does go out of its way to interact with its partners and always encourages (and of course, respects) client feedback. For example, as we mentioned before, the affiliate team has recently asked for affiliates to step forward and test out the new Bone Fish member’s area. Why, you may ask. Because Bone Fish considers its affiliates to be part of its team and because it understands that for the program to be successful, all elements of it must work 100%. And who better to test it than those that will be the harshest critiques of all?

Aside from this, Bone Fish Ltd also has a fantastic bonus scheme that has affiliates earning up to 100% commission on new sales. This is generally unheard of in the white label game but is something which really makes Bone Fish stand at the forefront of the online dating industry.

And finally, without a doubt Bone Fish has one of the most sophisticated email campaign management solutions in the world. Accredited by various white listing providers and ISPs, it serves over 6 million messages a month. As such, these member communications generate high return rates of members, which in turn convert into sales. No other management solution is quite like ours – it really is unparalleled.

eHarmony Now Compatible With Gays

by David Evans on November 20, 2008 · 0 comments

in Dating Sites

compatiblepartnerslogo.jpgEric McKinley, a gay man from New Jersey, sued eHarmony to let him be a member. Just in time for Proposition 8, Eric got his wish. Now gays can meet online, fall in love, and still not get married in most states.

eHarmony, Inc. legal counsel Theodore B. Olson:

Even though we believed that the complaint resulted from an unfair characterization of our business, we ultimately decided it was best to settle this case with the Attorney General since litigation outcomes can be unpredictable,

“Unpredictable” is one way to put it. I think he meant to say, “expensive.”

Eric has won a free year of eHarmony service and $5,000. If he successfully finds a match, he can be featured under the “Diversity” section on the successful relationships area.

As a result of the ruling, eHarmony is about to launch Compatible Parters for gays. I can’t believe they could only get the .net version of the url. Featuring a new website and a logo that looks like it was done in MS Paint, eHarmony now caters to the gay population and is (almost) open for business.

Let me get this, er, straight. Ever since day one, eHarmony has said that their research never took gays into consideration and that their matching system wouldn’t work for gays. Am I the only one that sees the irony here?

New eHarmony FAQ

Q: What happens to my profile now that gays are allowed?

A: Gay profiles are on a completely different website and database. At no time will your straight profile touch a gay one.

Q: What if I need help?

A: Because we don’t understand you, we have hired several gay customer service reps. They understand terms like “fierce” and “bottom” and which back pocket your handkerchief goes in.

I wonder if the eHarmony will have to say that it admits gays in 12 point type on the home page.

Besides advertising in the Advocate, I wonder how much money eHarmony is going to spend marketing to gays? I talked to many, many gay people about this and nobody ever said it bothered them or that they wanted to be a member.

What does this mean for Chemistry.com? What does this mean for the existing eHarmony brand? Will it burnish or harm it? I think it’s going to be a blip on the radar, in terms of revenue and traffic for eHarmony.

I’m glad Compatible People is a new url that we can track traffic separately from eHarmony.com.

Keep an eye out for a new Kathy Griffin monologue.

The Unofficial eHarmony Blog has all the details and links.
