How cool is it going to be if/when Apple’s new FaceTime feature becomes an open standard and runs on all mobile phones? Did you see the FaceTime demo video over at Engadget or the news at Gizmodo? I almost never go on first dates without talking to the person on the phone, and video is the natural progression, far out as that may seem at the moment. A quick video chat could save both parties from wasting time and money on dates that could have called off after a 5 minute phone conversation. Now, imagine having that call and being able to videochat with the other person.
What if you could mask your image with an avatar? Not difficult to implement and now that iPhone has multi-tasking you could chat, play a game, answer questions, etc.
There are a lot of things that could keep Apple’s supposedly-open Facetime from becoming the standard for mobile videoconferencing, but it’s exciting to ponder the possibilities and it’s potential to affect the issue of “first contact.”
