Illegal profile sharing: It’s becoming more apparent that certain dating sites are clandestinely sharing profiles between their own networks of sites and sometime the competition. This is something users might not be aware of, and one-click profile copying from site-to-site is becoming more prevalent, which has it’s positive aspects but the nature in which sites are implementing it are sketchy at best and possibly illegal.

Cupid Media is embracing the National Cyber Security Awareness Week, launching OnlineDatingSafetyTips. I’m all for educating singles about how to avoid scams but this stuff has to be baked directly into the dating site itself. As an example, OKCupid has a “watch out for scammers ” alert along with additional information that pops up when you are emailing someone. Contextually, that is a much better warning than a third-party site. I applaud the effort Cupid is making, now all they have to do is embed the info into their sites.

My personal information, my Facebook social graph, my dating profiles and photos and search criteria, it’s mine all mine and the sooner the dating industry picks up on this the better. Unfortunately, as mentioned above, some sites believe in openness, but the wrong kind.
