OkCupid asked me to have fun with them developing a press release touting the economic benefits of free dating sites.
With gasoline prices inflicting pain on Americans everywhere, singles across the country can save the equivalent of a full tank of gas every month, according to OkCupid.com, America’s largest and fastest growing free online dating site. While President Bush is betting that a $600 check per taxpayer will revive the economy, OkCupid saves singles over $600 every year, helping the economy stay strong for the long term.
“Consumers spend over one billion dollars a year on subscriptions to online dating sites,” said Dave Evans, editor of Online Dating Insider. “OkCupid lets you spend your money on a date, instead of looking for one.”
OkCupid’s quiz-based, highly social approach and unique matching algorithm fly in the face of online dating convention by giving singles a way to interact with one another the way they would in real life. The site is already the favorite of over 2,000,000 unique monthly visitors, and is the fastest growing free online dating site in America.
“If a $600 stimulus check is the key to rescuing the economy, then we can double the pleasure for millions of singles across the country,” said Sam Yagan, CEO and co-founder of OkCupid. “Just imagine what America’s singles could do with an extra billion dollars to spend on dates, rather than dating sites: 250,000,000 flowers, 200,000,000 beers, 100,000,000 movie tickets, or 20,000,000 dinners. And economic wouldn’t be the only kind of stimulation, either. “
PR efforts like this are neat. I expect more press coverage due to the fact that they tied the story into broader issues everyone faces, not just singles. It will be fun to track where the release is picked up, ego surfing is a nice was to end the work day.
I’m off to visit the new Apple Store in Boston, which opens in 14 minutes. It’s the worlds largest Apple store. After that it’s open bar next to Fenway Park at the POPSignal party.
