I haven’t written much about Opensocial since it was released several weeks ago.
OpenSocial is a set of common APIs that application developers can use to create applications that work on any social networks (called “hosts) that choose to participate.
Since then I’ve had several conversations with dating sites interested in learning more about how OpenSocial can benefit them, what data sharing means for members and how additional revenue might be derived from a more open stance towards data sharing. Right now it’s the wild west, lot’s of smart people hunkered down trying to figure out how to leverage the Opensocial hype and seeing what other early-adopter dating sites are planning to do with the technology.
Userplane has announced they will be releasing OpenSocial APIs — allowing OpenSocial application developers to integrate Userplane apps, such as Webchat, Webmessenger and Webrecorder, within their applications.
Application developers can use the Userplane Money API to deliver ads within their OpenSocial applications. The revenue sharing system provides virtually instant payout for any volume of display ad units. Currently, Userplane serves tens of millions of daily ad impressions for Facebook developers, providing a very attractive and stable monetization strategy.
I definitely need to spend some time digging into this. I’m hoping someone from Userplane will chime in and provide additional details, as many dating sites use Userplane chat.
This bit from the press release got me thinking, how much money are people making with Userplane money?
Earlier this year Userplane released its own Facebook application, and made Userplane Money available to anyone developing applications for Facebook. The move enabled developers to earn money with the widgets they make available to users of the popular social networking site.
I’ll be talking more about OpenSocial in coming weeks when I have some free time on my hands.
