MyCampusDates is awarding up to $5,000 in scholarships to students from Butler University, Indiana University, Purdue University, Ball State University, and Indiana State University to represent their campus as the “Date Master.

The “Date Master will represent their university for MyCampusDates as the “go to person for advice on dating/social issues and the website itself, while creating buzz on campus for other students to join. Each “Date Master will oversee the functionality of the site, and provide promotional marketing ideas while helping other students become more socially active.

This is an interesting way to market the site. Lot’s of companies have people on campus promoting credit cards, vacations, mobile phones, etc. Why not promote a dating site?

Being 16 years out of college, but living in Boston, a huge college town, as well as a frequent patron of drinking establishments (where the college action is around here), I question the number of signups this marketing  tactic will draw, especially when it’s a free/paid hybrid. Cheaper than sponsoring events though.

When it comes to competition, one word, Facebook.
