The market is saturated with mobile apps for finding nearby friends, dates and deals, but this hasn’t kept the ex-CEO of Match.com, Jim Safka, from starting a new location-based social/dating site called AtZip. I have 10 or so similar apps on my phone and I pretty much don’t use any of them except Foursquare and Facebook check-ins. This means I’m connecting with people I already know and not discovering new people as much but at least for now, even in Boston, the traffic on these apps is to low to be useful. I’ll continue to try new location-based discovery apps and report back when I use one more than three times before abandoning it.
As a runner, I am somewhat particular about running with people who are at a similar pace. Now there’s a site called JoggingBuddy that makes it easier to find your optimum running partner. Not a dating site, but close. what I’d like to see is an app like Bump that shares my contact information with people as we run by each other.
