The popularity of certain blog posts always amazes me. By far the most popular post in recent times has been about Chatroulette and a few years ago I dashed off a missive about the Craigslist killer which was at the top of the charts for a long time. While Chatroulette has cooled off (500,000 daily naked dudes, seeking business model), new takes on the old standard have launched every so often.
Pick or Skip is the latest, claiming to be a social network based on video chat technology in order to multiply real life meetings. Similar to Chatroulette, people can chat for as long as they want or hit the ‘Skip’ button and meet the next person. If partners want to stay in contact they have the option to press ‘Pick.’
Further features will soon follow to complete this first service such as:
• Video chat between friends, allowing people to speak to and see their friends instead of sending them text messages.
• Advanced selection criteria, intended to improve the efficiency of matching members.
• The creation of events and groups, expanding the website features, making the network more dynamic.
People are used to paying a lot for SpeedDate.com or WooMe.com, PickOrSkip and a number of other Facebook-powere videochat apps are all free for the most part. Expect video introductions and pre-date chat options to continue to grow, although its going to take years before people are comfortable enough to videochat enough to make it worthwhile for large dating sites to (re)add the feature.
