Online Dating Sites Begin Embracing Twitter

by David Evans on February 20, 2009 in Marketing

After seeing Match.com on Twitter yesterday I decided to see what dating sites and other related brands/people/blogs are on Twitter. I started by checking out all the people who OnlineBootyCall follows, because that seemed like a logical place to start. OBC has had a dedicated social media person monitoring Twitter since July 2008, bootylicious.

I’m http://twitter.com/daveevans, I started on Twitter back in Feb 2007. Working on this post I realized once again that I lead a bit of a dual life between the social media crowd, online dating and all of the other Internet stuff I’m involved in. I tend to keep things somewhat neatly compartmentalized, which tends to collapse in social spaces like Facebook, Twitter and Brightkite. Here’s to worlds colliding.

I wanted a list of online dating tweeps, and had to start somewhere. This list is just the tip of the iceberg, Leave your Twitter link in the comments and I’ll add you to a the list.

I’ll talk more about Twitter best practices for online dating sites in another post.

The last thing I want to see is dating sites fail when it comes to social media. Until tonight I have not been impressed, but after spending a few hours on Twitter tonight something tells me that Twitter could be the vehicle by which online dating is going to embrace social media.

Good find, Dave! Our latest posts since June 2008 are twitted at http://twitter.com/eharmonyblog . At least one third of our posts are there. Many of our “followers” are also involved one way or another with online dating.

Hey David,

Just wanted to chime in here and say that I’m a very proud husband of my beautiful pregnant Jane. She’s been rocking Twitter and we just launched out contest today. (Whoever told us that running a contest on your blog is easy should be hung by their toenails for 3 hours!)

Glad to hear you liked my wife’s Twitter name!

OK… I need to clear my cookies. If Jane sees anything to do with an online dating site in my browser history – I can promise you that my boys would never swim again!

My lesbian dating site is MeetHerHere.com, which I was pleased to see you have on your list. Twitter has been good for getting lesbians who are interested in meeting other lesbians to join MeetHerHere.com, so I recommend the social networking site as a good promotional tool.

I just purchased bluecollardates.com about 2 moths ago. I wanted to start with some social networking. I must say that tweeter has been doing ok for me. I still have to figure out how to really capitalize on it but I guess it’s a trial and error thing.

Hey not bad for a single mother running her own dating site.

Hi David I just came accross your article and its interesting to see so many dating sites utilising twitter.. I run a website in the UK & ROI that launched a couple moths ago specifially for older women to meet network and date with younger men, it’s based around the the growing Toyboy trend. Twitter definately looks like something that would be an interesting thing for us to use / harness so I will get back in touch shorlty once we have got a ‘twitter’ account if your still accepting entries! Thanks!

I just dont understand the point of a paid dating site having a twitter account. I mean, whats the point really? Now for dating coaches like me, ok that makes sense because I have an audience, but a dating site? What are they going to tweet about? Generic stuff no one cares about? Just my thoughts.

oh and “hisboyscanswim” is probably using an auto follower tool like hummingbird to inflate their following. I never trust accounts that follow 20,000 people, and have 20,000 followers.
