Friendster’s ‘Eww’ Moment

by David Evans on December 8, 2005 in Uncategorized

The WSJ (sub req’d) has an article by Jessica Mintz about the implications of the “Who’s Viewed Me” feature on Friendster. The article depicts the sensitive nature of the increased transparency afforded by new features that expose our viewing habits to to others, sometimes without our knowledge. I got the final say, complaining that “Who’s Viewed Me” lacks nuance. Much more can be accomplished by adding networking features that provide additional insight into why someone checked you out and what their reaction was.

Hi Dave! Hope all is well with you and happy holidays. At AppleDates we added a new ‘ApplemMatch’ feature that folds all of your profile questions with another member and is gives you a simple compatability score. We’re considering show you when someone AppleMatches their profile with your profile and sending you the score. We feel that the act of AppleMatching your profile with another is more proactive and this a bit more interesting that a simple “who’s viewed you” metric.

“Who’s Viewed Me” is the most requested feature i get on my site. That and a counter to show how many people have viewed your profile.

Dave, can you elaborate more on what you mean by “networking features” and how they would provide additional insight. Thanks.

James, that’s a topic I’ll be covering in an upcoming podcast.
