Instead of posting link-dumps to the blog every few days, notable nuggets of news will be published to @datinginsider. Fear not the Twitter-averse, those tweets will show up in the sidebar of Online Dating Insider as well. You can scroll back through the most recent 15 posts and easily click through to the full tweets on Twitter.

If you are involved in the online dating industry in any way, subscribe to @datinginsider and I'll follow you and if I think you make the cut, I'll add you to one of the Twitter lists I've started. Right now the only lists are marketing , safety & security, and onlinedatingbiz. I'll probably make some changes to the lists, but this is a solid step in the general direction of posting long-form articles on the blog and moving quick hits to Twitter.

I still need to figure out how to add tweets to the RSS feed, which has not changed from around 1,000 readers for several years now. I'm going to try a new push to see if I can get to 2,000 readers, or maybe everyone interested in the business of online dating is already subscribed and I have to work on attracting other users.

Approximately 70 or so people and dating companies listed their twitter account in the post and the comments. I'm following most of the people on my personal account @daveevans.

With the new Twitter Lists feature now in Beta, I decided to create a specialized online dating business list called onlinedatingbiz. I've attached that list to a Twitter account I created last year, @datinginsider. The account has a few followers and I'm going to have to work hard at promoting it but I needed to separate my own personal tweets from dating-related stuff.

If you followed me at @daveevans, please take a moment to follow @datinginsider and add yourself to the onlinedatingbiz list. I'll do my best to link to interesting posts here and retweet good stuff from other blogs and whatever interesting stuff people send my way.

Twitter Dating With Tweetlove: Adam at Ignighter wrote in to announce that they have launched a Twitter dating application called Tweetlove, basically an aggregator of Single Twitterers.

Talked to a University that is researching the EU online dating market. They said I was talking about things that noone else was, including the CEO's of the major EU dating sites. That made my day. My new iPhone nano, which is charging right now, also made my day.

Andrew at Boonex left a comment in reply to people saying that no successful dating sites have been built on a dating software platform.

Thanks to everyone that chimed in about my emails blacklist problems. I have a good idea what I need to do in order to sort things out.

I bought my mom a few trees with Mokugift. Knowing that my gift is a real tree that will help the environment made me feel good. A lot better than if I sent her a smiley face or a digital virtual gift. Thinking about the role of social consciousness and how it relates to online dating and social networking.

It's Just Lunch: Franchises run from $96-170k. Why pay that when you can start your own for much less? Wonder what a franchise license gets you.

After seeing Match.com on Twitter yesterday I decided to see what dating sites and other related brands/people/blogs are on Twitter. I started by checking out all the people who OnlineBootyCall follows, because that seemed like a logical place to start. OBC has had a dedicated social media person monitoring Twitter since July 2008, bootylicious.

I'm http://twitter.com/daveevans, I started on Twitter back in Feb 2007. Working on this post I realized once again that I lead a bit of a dual life between the social media crowd, online dating and all of the other Internet stuff I'm involved in. I tend to keep things somewhat neatly compartmentalized, which tends to collapse in social spaces like Facebook, Twitter and Brightkite. Here's to worlds colliding.

I wanted a list of online dating tweeps, and had to start somewhere. This list is just the tip of the iceberg, Leave your Twitter link in the comments and I'll add you to a the list.

I'll talk more about Twitter best practices for online dating sites in another post.

The last thing I want to see is dating sites fail when it comes to social media. Until tonight I have not been impressed, but after spending a few hours on Twitter tonight something tells me that Twitter could be the vehicle by which online dating is going to embrace social media.

I have spent an inordinate amount of time on Twitter lately. If you thought blogs sucked you into a vortex, just wait until you try Twitter. Follow me on Twitter.

I will attempt to describe Twitter. Many people have done a much better job.

A Twitter post is called a Tweet. Tweets are the same length as a text message you can send on your phone, 140 characters. Tweets can be viewed at Twitter.com, various desktop clients and of course you mobile phone.

How Twittter relates to other online media and their consumption.

Books -> Chapters -> Paragraphs -> Words - big, smaller, smallest.

Newspapers -> Articles - follows the same logic.

Blogs -> Twitter - Blog posts tend to take a lot of effort, you can post virtually anything to Twitter in 15 seconds.

Blogs posts are similar to a never-ending feed of instantaneous newspaper articles. Ignoring the fact that blogs are different from newspapers, which is a whole different discussion.

If you are a newspaper reader, you may think that the frequency of blogs is a bit too much. You appreciate how blogs often beat newspapers to major stories, and have the freedom to explore aspects of a story that MSM (mainstream media) can't afford to dig into, but you have a life and can only digest so much media every day.

If that's you, Tweets will drive you insane in about four hours. Twitter is your life, and everyone elses, 140 characters at a time. Typical Tweets can be mundane, like most blog posts, but people are learning how to exploit the medium in ways that truly amaze me.

Twitter is useful for a number of reasons. Developers are building all sorts of interesting services on top of the constant "lifestream" that is Twitter.

I flirt on Twitter, I get into arguments and I learn a lot from people I will probably never meet in my lifetime, all without worrying too much about the backlash. I also get some of the most incredible insights from people that blogs never let on.

I personally don't care much about what most people have to say on Twitter, but for a handful of people who I admire and respect, Twitter is a unique opportunity to glimpse into people's personal and professional lives.

Ok, now you know what Twitter is, you can check this out.

Eric Klaassen at http://datingfacts.web-log.nl) wrote:

Have you heard of Twitterdating already? In Europe it is gaining quite some media attention. You might want to check out this post: http://datingfacts.web-log.nl/datingfacts/2008/04/daten-via-twitt.html It is in Dutch, but the movie is in English!

Basically two people have a date on Twitter. I can't imagine doing that, but hey to be in your 20's and living on the Internet, makes perfect sense.

What's next, digital Haiku?

Facebook chat is rolled out to just about everyone today. When chat is tied into Facebook dating applications things are going to get interesting. Reminds me of Userplane's desktop presence if you have Facebook notifications turned on.

Conversation is getting broken down into increasingly smaller chunks. What is our attention threshold for paying attention to people and how does that fit into communicating with other singles on the Internet?

At some point, Twitter may pass webchat as the most useful way to keep in touch via short messages with people across multiple dating sites. Will chat applications embrace Twitter and inter-operate?

The days of belonging to and communicating with people on one dating site are coming to an end. The web is getting too fragmented and dating sites need to start working together or risk losing members to more open platforms, which I'll be talking about more in the future.

Posting about Twitterdating tomorrow.

I'm enjoying editing my Match profile every few days, adding the date and uploading new photos like it's a blog. Only problem is there are very few interesting people on Match around Boston. So I'm moving over to Yahoo Personals because I can't find a niche site thats right for me. I miss the old geographic-targeted dating sites. Where is the new local Boston dating site? It's not Craigslist, I've surfed that and backed away slowly every time, who are these people?

A service like Twitter would be perfect for Match. Same goes for Facebook's Notes, where short text blurbs can be easily added to your profile and Mini-Feed.

I subscribe to lots of Mini-feeds on Facebook. Susan Mernits at Yahoo Personals just popped up, stating:

Susan Mernit is planning how to fix bugs and prepping th attack The Big Bug List and scope it down. Fun.See, it ain't all poetry.

Now I have no idea what this bug list has to do with. Could be anything, or a Yahoo Personals product that's on a development server. Or is it issues with the live server? Security problems, credit cards, personal information? I'm not being alarmist, just saying that without context, the increasingly granular communication channels like Twitterstreams out there can be easily misinterpreted.

I'd still like to see dating profiles become more like blogs. Static profiles are so 2003. I guess phone calls and background checks are more important, because they bring in revenue immediately and dating sites are loath to implement anything that doesn't allow them to charge members.

For all the revenue-hunting that dating sites are doing (who said spending more on advertising was more effective than fixing your broken site?), they tend to ignore the very simple things that have the potential to make the largest difference.

I'm off to go for a ride on Codzilla.

I am loving 10zen, RU Sirius, video interview with Rudy Rucker, references to Jaron Lanier, early days of Virtual Reality and lots more edgy stuff. Good stuff for your brain. Also, they use Blip.tv, which you should check out if you're tired of YouTube.
