Skout Presenting at Demo Today at 2:30PM PST

Just got off the phone with Redg at Skout. Skout is presenting at Demo this afternoon, around 2:30pm PST. Demo is a launchpad for emerging technology, similar to TechCrunch 50.

Skout is bringing location-based dating to 10,000 social venues across the US. A special version of Skout will be running on 42″ touch-screens which people can use to send hard virtual goods in the form of music downloads, as well as the usual flirting and communicating.

Skout Out aggregates people nearby’s profiles and content. You can dedicate songs to people.

System also creates account on Skout, nice for adding new users easily.

Partnerships with online dating sites will be announced shortly.

Holy cow that is cool. Anyone remember back in the day when diners had phones in the booths and you could call other people in the same location? This is like that, on steroids.

The Skout iphone app launched recently and the system powered the in-conference messaging system at iDate in January.

Are Dating Site Instant Messaging and Chat About to End?

Facebook chat is rolled out to just about everyone today. When chat is tied into Facebook dating applications things are going to get interesting. Reminds me of Userplane’s desktop presence if you have Facebook notifications turned on.

Conversation is getting broken down into increasingly smaller chunks. What is our attention threshold for paying attention to people and how does that fit into communicating with other singles on the Internet?

At some point, Twitter may pass webchat as the most useful way to keep in touch via short messages with people across multiple dating sites. Will chat applications embrace Twitter and inter-operate?

The days of belonging to and communicating with people on one dating site are coming to an end. The web is getting too fragmented and dating sites need to start working together or risk losing members to more open platforms, which I’ll be talking about more in the future.

Reader Questions about Think/Together Deal

A reader writes in:

I read your post this morning about the Think/Together Deal and have several questions that maybe you can answer or post about.

Where does this currently leave Vinticom? Are they still owned by Think?

Is Vinticom still trying to sell themselves? Whatâ€™s Vinticomâ€™s status?

Any information about Vinticomâ€™s financials would be interesting.

Whatâ€™s the status of Together/Right One? Where they bought by the â€˜Chicago Groupâ€™? If yes, what was the purchase price and details on the acquisition including but not limited to multiples, etc.

Is this â€˜Chicago Groupâ€™ looking to purchase another dating company now that the deal with Think did not go through?

It would make sense for the Chicago Group to just purchase Vinticom and not involve itself with the Adult sites. Why would they bother with purchasing the Adult sites? Why is Think not willing to separate these 2 transactions.

How does Together plan to merge the online/offline dating world now that their deal with Vinticom did not happen?

Besides spelling Vintacom incorrectly, these are good questions. If Terry or Paul could chime in publicly that would be great.

Think Partnership and BET Interactive Team

In the last two weeks I have had two people mention to me that Think Partnership is having difficulties with it’s relationship properties.

The recent The Right One deal appears to have fallen through, and Relationship Exchange is a shell of its former self, with the sale to a mining concern on permanent hold.

Here we have news that Think is teaming up with BET Interactive on a new dating site with matchmaking capabilities.

Earlier this year I asked What Happened to Vintacom?

Previously, I noted that nothing says â€œwe care deeply about creating long-lasting relationshipsâ€? than being bought by a mining company involved in coal bed methane in the South Central Colorado region.

I think it’s a good idea for Think to unload it’s relationship properties and focus on it’s marketing companies.

While trolling around eBay I found The Right One is auctioning off memberships. Is that even legal?
