Date-Based Dating at How About We…

by David Evans on February 18, 2010 in Dating Sites

How about we.jpgSome time ago I met with Aaron Schildkrout and Brian Schechter in Boston to talk about their online dating startup. Fast forward several months and behold the soft launch of How About We, a dating site that puts the date back in dating. Instead of rating people on their dating profiles, you rate them based on their date ideas.

This is a novel idea and the site looks great. Very clean design and easy to use. No long profiles to complete, all you have to do is rate and submit date ideas. Definitely targeting more casual daters, the date ideas are great inspiration, I found a few ones that I may use here in Boston. Some of the dates are specific, like going to the top of the Empire State Building, whereas others are more event based, like coffee and scrabble.

The site is focused on New York City for now while they fill the database with local singles. Focusing on an initial specific geographic area is a good idea. Keeps marketing spend in check, easier to do live events and once you get lots of people in one geographic area, it’s time to move on to the next one.

When the site officially launches in March, members will start receiving new date proposals every day and others will begin seeing the dates you have created to other members.

I wonder who’s going to want to go ice skating with me on Frog Pond In Boston?

The How About We team threw a party in NYC last weekend. Check out the photos on their How About We Facebook Page and follow them on Twitter.

I recently signed up on howaboutwe.com. LOVED the date pictures, so cute. I also liked how I didn’t have to spend hours writing about my 10 strengths and weaknesses or if I’m happy or depressed 5 days out of a week…. can’t wait to go on a crazy date :)

this site is AWESOME! It is so refreshing to see a site matching people in terms of activities they want to do rather than their “likes and dislikes.” Can’t wait to propose a date to go bouldering in Central Park!

This actually sounds pretty cool. Looking forward to singing up and proposing a date that I actually want to go on… baseball game anyone?

Interesting idea, I like it. However, what is to stop Match from doing something similar. In addition, most date ideas aren’t very unique like coffee or movies, but for the really cool dates, I would like to keep it a secret. I don’t want other guys stealing good date ideas.

I think that Howaboutwe… is a GREAT idea!
On a first date I want to have a chance to get to know the other person, BUT I also want to have something to experience together and talk about.
Really, you can tell more about another person by what they say about the movie (or play, or concert) than about what they say about themselves!!!

I love this! Already thinking of 5 really fun dates I would love to go on. Seems like a great way to meet people and participate in exciting, random, lovely, activities around the city! Love it!! Lobster rolls and key lime pie in Red Hook anyone?

It is going to be so much more fun to look for quirky dates on this site than it is to troll through the endless profiles on other sites. I just wish this had existed when I lived in New York!

I also signed up. Easy, not too long process. Well-designed site. Loved the date ideas. Why hasn’t anyone done this before?

Online dating has an array of positives, like being able to get to know the person better before even meeting them. this gives it an edge over other forms of dating.

I registered on the site…I did not like that you don’t really know much about a person. Match and true are much better at “screening” potential candidates. If you have an idea for a date, just let your partner know – it’s not that hard! Also HATED the idea that you cannot read your mail – unless you PAY UP!!! Jeez. You got a response but you gotta pay to read it. IMO you should only pay TO WRITE somebody – maybe us girls will get more serious candidates, not respond. Why not make a site where you pay like $5 for each message your write TO somebody…(Goodbye, serial daters! Goodbye, yearly subscribtions! )
