My comment focuses on what the author said about POF and it being a pick up site. From a woman’s perspective – I agree, but shoot I say it is more like a landfill site of waste. The majority of men do want to fast talk you…into raw meat, some women allow it. And thus, the creation of a pick up site ~ POF. Its members spreads, pun made by me.

I am in no doubt plentyoffish attracts the numbers. It is after all Free and humans are creatures of habit. We have to find something completely new before we are prepared to move on. Evidence of this is in the introduction of applications by Facebook which blew Myspace away and has lead to many dating successful dating apps being created not least that of Zoosk! I do agree with Dawn’s point, there are better executed FREE dating sites out there such as http://www.freedating4singles.com This site doesn’t rank amongst the movers and shakers as its far too new to do so. However, it provides more features than most paid dating sites and if demand increases it will roll out Live Support early next year solving the Customer Service problem you mentioned. I’m looking forward to watching this one closely.

I always say that a dating site is only as good as your matches. You should also take your “target dating demographic” into consideration. The site that you personally are attracted to is not necessarily always the site where your ideal match might be hanging out.

How can we as an industry gauge how good a dating site is?

We probably will never be able to as no one is going to release the stats we will need to find out, like the number of active members (plus the definition of what they perceive as a active member), unique visitors from target markets, etc..

I realize Markus uses Comscore numbers as a comparison tool and for marketing purposes but I would be curious to find out what his real numbers are, either from his own internal tracking system or Google Analytics. I find numbers from companies like Comscore, are only good enough to give a general indicator of how a site is performing.
