So much for a slow August, incredibly busy signing new clients, working on some big projects, taking lots of calls and trying to enjoy summer before it disappears.
Interesting to see the matching system market heat up, have heard from to no less than three startups in the space this week.
Zoozamen (www.zoozamen.com), the couple compatibility test development company, have appointed Darren Gladstone as VP, International Sales and Business Development. Gladstone was previously UK Marketing Director for Spark Networks. The Zoozamen system allows users to complete a serious of questions aimed at producing a more accurate set of matching criteria. The test validity is significant higher than other matching tools in the industry, giving users more accurate matches for potential partners.
Virtual goods (viximo newsletter) appear to be slowly taking hold in the online dating space and some companies are even enabling people to sent real gifts without having to know the senders address. Tigerbow is on the Passions Network. Gimmeo is similar.
Spark Networks says “We again saw declines in revenue and average paying subscribers for Jewish Networks, which remains the lion’s share of our contribution, and consequently reduced overall contribution sequentially.” Seeing a pattern here?
Revenue declined reflecting the sale of Match Europe to Meetic on June 5(th). Excluding the results of Match Europe from both periods, revenue grew 9% during the quarter driven by a 9% increase in U.S. subscribers due to improvements in product and execution. Operating Income Before Amortization grew strongly reflecting lower customer acquisition costs as a percentage of revenue, due to lower partner related costs and other marketing expenses in the current period. Operating income benefited from a decrease in amortization of non-cash marketing of $3.1 million.
Paid subscribers are down 13% yet US subs are up 9%.

Thanks for the mention! We did indeed partner with Tigerbow to power our Real Gifts program and we’re very pleased with the early traction and the new interactive features we’re now able to offer our users. As one of the largest 100% free online dating social networks, we are always looking for new ways to monetize our traffic, and Tigerbow has turned out to be a perfect fit for us.
“enabling people to sent real gifts without having to know the senders address” <– Way to facilitate stalkers.
The person can refuse the gift, so its not really stalking. I think Amazon Wish list is similar, people can buy stuff on your list and not know where you live.
Thank you for the clarification, David. Not only can a person decline a gift, but when a gift is accepted the recipient’s physical address is kept private and confidential from the sender. Please feel free to read our FAQ’s at http://www.tigerbow.com/faq. The fourth FAQ down (http://www.tigerbow.com/faq#4) addresses this concern.
It’s a natural progression to go from virtual to real gifts, and provides another way to break through the subscription ‘ceiling’. Potential recipients receive a notification, asking whether they want to accept or reject the gift, and can provide an address which will be withheld from the sender.
