Lunch With MaxMind, Giant Red Shoes

by David Evans on October 16, 2008 in Dating Safety

maxmindheels.jpgI had lunch with Ed from MaxMind today. The weather is still warm enough to eat outside which is great, as we Bostonians are counting down the days until the first frost. IT execs at dating sites know what MaxMind is, due to the popularity of their GeoIP and Minfraud technology in the dating space. Ed and I took a pretty deep dive into the anti-fraud needs of dating sites and social networks. Expect to hear a lot more from me about how to keep members safe and reduce fraud. I’m going to collaborate with a number of people to develop resources to address issues important to online dating executives like driving more traffic and raising conversion rates as well. Check out the motorized shoe behind Ed, part of a Marshall’s promotion, there were people walking around with shoes on silver platters all over town.

Every time I restart the broadband modem, it changes the IP Address.
It is funny to see how wrong GeoIP could be to detect my location.

(I restart it nearly 20 times per day)

and I am really in other city

It is like you are in Boston and GeoIP thinks you are in Miami,
    or
you are in Boston and GeoIP thinks you are in Dallas.
    or
you are in Boston and GeoIP thinks you are in Houston.

The generic lookup services you are using are nowhere near as targeted as anti-fraud solutions, which have many other features to help triangulate fraud (not necessarily your exact location.)

Your reaction is common, you are assuming that since you have a slow car, all cars must be slow.

Why on earth do you restart your cable modem 20 times a day? Maybe that’s part of your problem. I restart mine maybe once a month.
