Update Your Dating Profile Via Facebook, Firefox And Twitter

by David Evans on September 9, 2008 in Profiles

Dear dating sites,

Your profiles are stale because you make it difficult for people to update them. I can update my social network status from Twitter, Firefox, myriad desktop clients, Flash apps and every mobile phone but I have to go through a 10 step process to change my profile title or opening paragraph.

I would pay Match $1.99 a month to let me update my profile remotely via Facebook or Twitter or my phone without having to see mis-targeted ads for women (I’m a guy) and other remnant junk advertising inventory, especially when I’m shelling out $20 per month in the first place. I do not want to ever, in my entire life, attend the University of Phoenix. Stop it.

I personally, with little coaching, could probably build a Firefox extension to update my profile from Firefox in a few days. But I want somebody else to do this for me that can whip it up in 24 hours. Who’s up to the task?

Fresher profiles = more engaged members = better reputation = more marketing opportunities = more new members = more revenue = happy shareholders. Did I miss anything?

Where are the dating site iPhone applications? I can practically remotely diagnose a pacemaker implanted in someone’s chest with my iPhone but I can’t easily interact with other singes.

While I applaud the effort of using social media tools for marketing, people are spamming me on Twitter from AmaterMatch. That sucks, stop it.

    Hi David,

I’d disagree with you on this one – I don’t think people want their Facebook profile to be mirrored onto a dating site – no more than they’d want their Facebook profile on their linked in page.

It’s for a different purpose – and if my mates on Facebook saw the kind of profile I had on dating sites when I was dating they’d never let me live it down.

Regarding the iPhone – we’ve actually got this in the pipeline and hope to have an iPhone version of our sites live by the end of the year.

We won’t be going for an iPhone application yet, but rather an iPhone-optimised view of the site (a bit like Facebook had before they introduced their Facebook App)

Ross, I said update your profile, didn’t mean share all profile data, although being able to share some of it would be useful.

Agree the two should for the most part be separate.

    Hi Guys,

I’m a bit late jumping in here but….

We created a iphone version of our site about 6 months ago. While traffic is’nt great, it is being used and we are getting new members who join via it. We also get the odd payment off it.

In terms of time to develop and the payback in traffic and revenue its been worth doing. We’re also seeing an increased amount of traffic as the months go by.

I think the app is a good idea and its in the pipeline once I can find a free developer :)
