I am liking the Compete blog’s posts on the online dating market. December’s numbers are of interest, look at the difference between visitors and active members. This is exactly the type of metrics we need to be looking at when evaluating the overall success of dating sites.

Mate1.com and True.com both do a terrific job of driving visitors to their sites, but this traffic simply doesn’t convert. Members represent 13% and 24% of total visitors (respectively).
While the represent major dating services in terms of total visitors, both True.com and Mate1.com look like they compete more with Niche site BlackPeopleMeet when compared on the basis of member visits. Aggressive acquisition and sales tactics (such as requiring a subscription for any type of user-to-user communication) are prime factors in their equally low repeat visitation (around 5 times per month per user).
Interesting observations, indeed. Look at the numbers from February 2007 for comparison.

Singlesnet makes you sign up to do a search. Yahoo and Match don’t (that I recall) - that probably pads the number of ‘active’ members.

Hi!
It s not necessarily a dating site, more of a social genealogical website which aims to connect the whole world by encouraging people to build their family trees.
On http://www.jworld.famillion.com you can also share pictures and stories and check if there are relatives out there that you didn t know about!
It s great - I found that I had family in Argentina and this summer I am planning to travel there…
regards,
Deborah

Yes, sites that force you to sign up to do a search definitely do pad the numbers. On top of that, what happens is that most of the members on those sites are fake. I run a free dating site Allsinglesmeet.com and my people are all real to the best of my knowledge. Also, I approve persoanlly every profile that is on my site!

Paid dating sites always convert less then free, they should make them free.

As the economy worsens why would any one pay for a dating service when you can get one for free. Mark my words… http://www.allsinglesmeet.com will lead the way in free online dating within a year! You can do everything there from instant message to customizing your profile.

I tried so many dating sites with no responses. And they all charged me without giving me anything for the money. But now there is a new, free dating site coming up, freehappydating.com
There’s nothing to lose and they promise to give the members a proper chance to be found in the site.
