Fueling the Rumor Mill: Dating Site Background Checks

by David Evans on January 8, 2008 in Dating Safety,Rumors

It’s come to my attention via several people, that a major dating site is going to announce a background check initiative, expect big news later on in the week.

Speaking of safety, check out TrustPlus (blog). The reputation management company launched into private beta on September. I wrote about them a year ago when I saw their demo at a local web startup event. I’ve helped several companies built similar systems, interested in hearing what people think.

I’m off to what I hope will be an interesting dinner with several companies who have successfully deployed Facebook applications.

    Dave,

Until these services are offered for free (which will never happen), or paid for by the end user, I don’t see them catching on anytime soon. Sites like POF who only make money from ads, would take a huge hit in cash by providing this service free of charge.

Users will mostly likely foot the bill for background checks and authentication services for the foreseeable future. I don’t think dating sites will cut into revenue by offering checks free of charge.
