Sex.com: a url worth dying for?

by David Evans on December 14, 2006 in Dating Sites,Legal

Stephen Cohen, who stole Sex.com from Match.com founder Gary Kremen and whose whereabouts are still unknown — can now add “gangland murder attemptâ€? to his life story.

Who doesn’t like a story that includes a:

Convicted felon, a private investigator with a Stanford MBA, a Match.com startup dot-commer (now former) tweaker, a daughter caught smuggling 202 pounds of marijuana, a bizarre bid to buy Caesars Palace in Las Vegas, and the operator of a Mexican shrimp farm. Don’t forget the Tijuana assassination attempt.

At tiny nibbles, via BoingBoing, of course.

Naahh. The only thing dying for are sites who have amassed great traffic or have a large base or are great bookmarkers.

Although a short and powerful domain name can have a rapid effect and make a dent on users minds, this can be easily overcome by a great website that has been conceived to fill a need and implemented under a strict plan, which may mean nothing more than jumping into the scene even if the site is not quite ready… Does the word flickr mean anything to anyone? Is it in any dictionary yet?
