Tuesday 4-18-06 Update

by David Evans on April 18, 2006 in Dating Sites

A nice Boston Marathon yesterday, capping off a great weekend.

After shedding it’s dating businesses, Think Partnerships is out of the dating game. To celebrate, they went out and bought IceRocket, a blog search engine. IceRocket is owned by Mark Cuban, owner of the Dallas Mavericks.

Ice Rocket CEO Blake Rhodes:

We have spent significant time evaluating many opportunities within the interactive marketing and advertising space, and have concluded that Think Partnership was clearly positioned as one of the premier companies in our market as well as being a leading edge technology based company with the resources to execute on this exciting opportunity.

My conclusion based on the side-by-side blog search engine tests I did this morning is that Icerocket has a long way to go before it’s considered delivering authoritative results. Think obviously couldn’t afford Technorati, the leader in the blog search field, which I think will be picked up by Yahoo, NewsCorp or a similar company at some point this year.

Robert Young talk about Cyworld, the Korean version of Myspace. Cyworld makes over $200k every day selling in-world items for your virtual 3D space.

To be clear, I haven’t seen a decent blog search engine yet that works anywhere near as good as the major search engines. Part of that is that blog spam is newer and the search engines have a lot more experience combatting regular web spam.

One of the terms I used was “auto rental boston”. Technorati vs. Icerocket: Icerocket has more spam results up top and Technorati has more farther down. Most other blog search engines had much more spam.

Interestingly, the sidebar ads in both blogs were more useful than the blog results themselves.

I’m most interested in watching the moves Think is making as they move more into internet marketing and search and shed their old skin. Not to do a shootout between blog search engines.

Icerocket may be a good fit for Think, which seems to be settling down into a groove of sorts recently.

How much do you think it will go for?

Interesting that all of the companies Think has recently sold still show up on the home page.

Wow – didn’t know Ice Rocket got sold. I’ve been a big fan since day one. The ability to see the home page is amazing — that tech alone makes it worth more than whatever it’s price was. Now Ask.com is even advertising their version of that feature by saying you can click and see a ‘telescope’ version of the home page. Ice Rocket lets you see the whole home page and with a quick scan you can get a ‘feel’ of how your topic is played out by the online media congrats guys…keep up the good work. js
