BoingBoing says sex.com (not worksafe) has been picked up for a cool $14 million by a web development company called Escom. A social network is in the works.
Owner Gary Kremen should be familiar, he founded Match.com. I’ve covered the backstory here a few times which goes into details of how Cendant bought Match in 1997 for $8 million and flipped it a year later for $50 million. Those were the days.

Obviously the domain name sex.com is one-of-a-kind but wouldn’t a company be better off obtaining a much cheaper domain name and putting the $14 million behind the marketing and branding of that name?
I think sex.com it worth more than 14 million dollars , because it gets too many unique visitor per month and sex industry is the best money making these days
Nah. Some things are unattainable. Marketing a word to be as simplistic and well-ingrained as the word ‘sex’ is one of them. If I had the money, I’d rather buy the domain rather than try to market another one. Most domains aren’t worth it. I’d say this one was.
Americans finally realize the try-before-you-buy works just as well with sex as it does with commodities. Rather than marrying and then shacking up with hot sex coming after the nuptuals, Americans are increasingly putting out before putting on the wedding rings.Women are just as likely as men to get it on before matrimony.
I think this is just the sign of the times. I mean, we like to test things, try them out, before making a purchase. Why should sex and marriage be any different? The stigma associated with pre-marital sex is dead. Long live free love!
They know damn well the value of the domain and website.
Look at football stars cost 23 million and sell 20 mil in shirts the week after.
