Speaking of new dating sites, this got my attention. AirTroductions is a new service to connect air travelers. Concept is new, but who wants to have a first date on an airplane? Imagine if the other person did not act or look like they did on the phone and in their profile? I can imagine the horror stories that will result.

The business networking side of the idea has lots of merit. If the founder is smart he will forgo adding business profiles on the site and do a deal with LinkedIn.

The site was developed by Dataart. I’m surprised they didn’t go with an off-the-shelf solution, nobody builds sites from scratch anymore.

Who’s up for a speed-dating session back in coach?

Hey - there’s nothing wrong with doing a custom build. Advocating tailoring off-the-shelf solutions is going to get you a lot of “me-too” sites.

Custom all the way, baby…

I agree, custom sites lead to new and interesting features at times. The problem is that 90% of all dating sites are small affairs with little or no tech support for maintenance and upgrades. Once the cookie-cutter site is developed, it stays that way forever. 99% of all dating sites are me-too already, it’s not like these sites will hurt the industry at this point. We’re past the point where cheaper development costs will trump marketing dollars.

Custom-built solutions are far too expensive for most dating site operators who rely on advertising dollars for revenue. Unless you are tight with a developer who is willing to put up some serious elbow grease for future earnings, I just don’t see custom builds as cost-effective these days for the majority of operators.

I’ve yet to see a solid AJAX-driven mysql PHP one-click install site or a revenue share site that didn’t want an enormous slice of the revenue pie. Your mileage may vary.

Well, on the upside, you know exactly how long the date is going to last (give or take the odd emergency maitenance layover in the Middle of Nowhere International Airport halfway between), and you’re in a secure, public environment. If I flew much at all, I’d give it a shot (at least it guarantees somebody relatively compatible to talk to).

I do agree with you, though–the business networking side is where the real gold is in this concept.
