National Unmarried and Single Americans Week is September 18 - 24. “National Singles Week� was started by the Buckeye Singles Council in Ohio in the 1980s to celebrate single life and recognize singles and their contributions to society. The week is now widely observed during Sept. 19-25 as “Unmarried and Single Americans Week,� an acknowledgment that many unmarried Americans do not identify with the word “single� because they are parents, have partners or are widowed.

- Percentage of unmarried and single Americans who are women: 54%
- Number of unmarried and single Americans age 65 and over: 14.5 milion

The Yahoo! Personals Singles’ Voice Survey, which asked more than 2000 singles about their dating preferences, provides a rich and compelling picture of today’s single person. This year, the Yahoo! Personals’ Single Voice Survey shows promising results for singles looking to find true love. According to the survey, singles are serious about finding a lasting mate—more than 75 percent of singles are looking for long-term relationships with the 45-49 year old age group leading the way.
Other interesting findings in the Yahoo! Personals Singles’ Voice Survey include:
• Seventy-one percent of respondents look for a great personality when considering a date followed by physical appearance (22 percent).
• Once on a date, almost 50 percent of both men and women agreed that sense of humor was the most important feature of a “good date.�
• The presence of online daters 50-years-old and up is on the rise, due in part to the fact that they are increasingly becoming tech-savvy and have witnessed friends and family find romantic success online.

On Sunday, September 17, 2006, singles in Indianapolis will have a reason to celebrate. National Singles week starts on September 17 and continues through September 23.
