Given that they gave out 1,000,000 free memberships, one wonders what revenue numbers the staggering increase of 1000% are based upon.

This telling paragraph clearly compares how Eharmony and PerfectMatch market their services:

PerfectMatch’s well funded competitor, Christian-oriented eHarmony, has turned to cable television with a reported $50 million ad budget. The PerfectMatch team, pioneers in the dating and relationship space, has picked up significant market share by acquiring premium brand partners and creatively leveraging the entertainment industry as a way to elevate its message above the online clutter.

There is another interview that was done in the last few weeks that quotes the CEO saying they are doing over a million a month in revenues.

These guys have come from nowhere to do some serious damage over the past 8 months. Very impressive.

One interesting thing about perfectmatch is they claimed they have never paid to be included in movies.

The two “good” things I have to say about PerfectMatch:

1. They have an amazing PR/Marketing department. The placements and partnerships are genius.
2. They are slightly more ethical than eHarmony.

Assuming that the 1,000% revenue increase is real, it was for some given quarter over the same quarter last year. Not a particularly useful statistic, but it makes for a good press release. I’m assuming that last year’s numbers weren’t good (before the PR campaign started?), making the increase huge. There are also some accounting tricks that could be used to shift revenue among quarters.

It was also amusing to read PerfectMatch’s spin on their Dr. Phil Show episode. There’s an article on the net by a man who actually participated in this show, and his version of what happened is slightly different. Search for “perfectmatch” and “debra burleson” (the editor of the article) to find it.

That said, I think that PerfectMatch is in a good position to take over eHarmony’s spot as the top serious relationship site.

In addition to its Hollywood moment, the site also was discussed on an episode of self-help guru Dr. Phil, and has garnered 2 million subscribers. The privately held company makes more than $1 million each month in subscription revenue, said Mr. Dahl.
