John, Chronological hacks are only part of the solution. A first step towards Adwords style ranking. At ProfileDoctor, we have been doing this for a while now, but it’s difficult to get people to pay more for the service.

Do I really want, as a consumer, to view people who pay $3.99 a month to have a top listed profile? Personally, that means nothing to me except the person is a serious dater and gullible, because I never see any metrics showing that promoted profiles do any better.

Here we go—the birth of a bidding system to get one noticed on a dating site!

My business of profile writing will have to start including management of an Adwords style campaign to get my clients right up there in the Match weekly email….even if I wrote a good profile….gotta add another layer of marketing to get them to read the profile!

You used to be able to game Match.com big time.

A simple trick like updating your profile text would pop you to the top. Now you have to either change your photo or wait until it’s your “time of the month” to rotate highly.

Nothing beats being a NEW member though — they rotate highly for about a week with the “NEW” designation. It is not a bad idea for someone who has been on a while and is re-activating an account to open a new profile ID instead. It will give you a boost over the other online daters.

Is there anyway to find out when the SEC will give the go-ahead? And, of course, if Spark will actually go through with the offering (last year, they pulled it – almost to the day, Aug 12, 2004 – shortly after the SEC approved it).

Unrelated question: does anyone know what is happening with Spark’s IPO? Last year, it was right around this time, and they applied later to the SEC then than this year.

I agree about listing position. I’ve always wondered if there was a way to “game” the search results to appear higher in the listing, just like SEO bu for dating search engines.

I think your a few years to late with your SEO spam. Most dating sites have already figured out you can get 2 to 3,000 free signups a day by putting up city state spam combinations.

Good luck with the forced registration. From my amateur view all that does is rack up a bunch of profiles with no pictures and “I’ll fill this in later” or similar gibberish text.
