Class Action Suite against Intermix Media

by David Evans on August 31, 2005   in Finance

Kreindler & Kreindler LLP (think $2.7 billion Vioxx settlement) has filed a class action lawsuit on behalf of shareholders of Intermix Media, Inc., which includes MySpace, alleging that current directors, officers and controlling shareholders of Intermix designed a sale to News Corporation that benefited themselves at the expense of the Company and its public shareholders. Open Identity Standards

by David Evans on August 31, 2005   in Identity

Social Software post about Flickr and Yahoo supporting open identity standards.

My old roomate use to work for Sherry Turkle, who nails why Flickr users are upset at being lumped in with Yahoo members. Part of the Flickr draw was that it is a small group (well smaller than Yahoo at least) who identified with each [...]

Friendster to offer classifieds

by David Evans on August 31, 2005   in Features

First there were newspapers, then Craigslist, then Tribe.net and now Friendster is getting into the lucrative classifieds business.

Friendster will soon offer customizable profile pages, just like MySpace. This is probably a case of too little too late. Friendster needs to revitalize their community with communication and collaboration features, not another place to buy used furniture.

I [...]

Online Dating Kit Discontinued

by David Evans on August 29, 2005   in Marketing

Devlyn Steele, a personal coach, created the Online Dating Kit, a booklet & CD kit to help people figure how how to do online dating. I received an email today stating that Devlyn is discontinuing the ODK affiliate program. I wonder how many units he’s shipped, seemed like a useful product.

Myspace to start record label

by David Evans on August 29, 2005   in Innovation

MySpace is the new MTV. New York Times says that music-driven social networking site MySpace is getting more hits than Google, stickier than Friendster and the founders say they are starting a record label.

From 0 to 26 million members in a few years, first to offer blogs, 20-something market, promoting music (something 20-somethings will actually [...]

by David Evans on August 29, 2005   in Finance

Speculation at BusinessWeek that Target.com is a potential suitor of TheKnot.com. It’s $250 million market cap is considered attractive, especially when profits soar and a Nasdaq listing looms.

PerfectMatch revenue up 1000%

by David Evans on August 26, 2005   in Finance

Given that they gave out 1,000,000 free memberships, one wonders what revenue numbers the staggering increase of 1000% are based upon.

This telling paragraph clearly compares how Eharmony and PerfectMatch market their services:

PerfectMatch’s well funded competitor, Christian-oriented eHarmony, has turned to cable television with a reported $50 million ad budget. The PerfectMatch team, pioneers in the [...]

Match online chat

by David Evans on August 25, 2005   in Dating Sites

I’m logged into the live chat at Match right now. Questions are softballs, I would be surprised if they were not created by the Match staff and fed to the expert. Sample of questions:

“How do I tell if someone likes me?”
“What if he doesn’t call me back?”
“How important is sexual compatability?”

Answers are along the lines [...]
