FriendFinder SpringStreet acquisition update

by David Evans on July 27, 2005 in Marketing

Details are slowing coming across the wire. Red Herring and a bunch of news outlets have contacted me today trying to make sense of the deal.

One of the questions I get asked most often is what is FriendFinder’s real traffic ranking?

12M visitors is what is officially published at ComScore, how much of that is spyware vendors? I expect Markus to chime in on this.

In the meantime, here’s a quote from Jack Mardack, Director of Marketing, FriendFinder, Inc.:

I can tell you that 180 Solutions has helped us acquire more than 10,000 new members since August 2003.

This was dated last year.

I think the bigger question is how many of those 12 million uniques are from popup ads/affiliates.

AFF gets huge amounts of adult popup traffic. These networks put up exit popups and onload popups so that a user gets automatically sent to the AFF site.

AFF has said had a statement on the site for the last 3+ years that they pay out over a million to affiliates monthly. Assuming the average affiliate is earning 10 cents a click (a very high number) that would mean they are driving at least 10 million visitors a month via affilate marketing.

I send AFF over 100,000 visitors a month and i know of several other affiliates that send hundreds of thousands of visitors a month. If i had to make a guess i would say at least 80% of their traffic is from is from affiliates, and of that over 90% is from adult webmasters/sites.
